چکیده

By combining the spatio-temporal distribution of fish abundance and their size structure, and a detailed lifetime Sr/Ca ratio analysis in their otoliths, this study delineates the estuarine use and the movement patterns of seven sympatrical occurring adult mullets in the Tatu Creek estuary, central western Taiwan. In the estuaryMugil cephalus are the most dominant species, whereas Liza subviridis, Liza macrolepis and Liza haematocheilus are common, and Liza affinis, Liza dussumieri and Valamugil seheli are rare. They have adapted a size-related salinity preference. Amean Sr/Ca ratio of (7.5e10.2) 10 3 in the otolith cores demonstrated that all sevenmullet species spawned in the sea. After recruiting to the estuary (mean ratios of (3.6e6.4) 10 3 at the estuarine check in the otoliths), the ratiosfluctuate between (0.1e3.5) 10 3 and (9.5e19.5) 10 3 indicating that the mullet shared a common movement between marine and brackish waters and probably even freshwater habitats. However, the profiles fluctuated substantially among individuals. Therewas high intra-specific variation amongM. cephalus and L. subviridis, intermediate intraspecific variation among L. macrolepis and L. affinis, and relatively little among L. haematocheilus, L. dussumieri andV. seheli. Persistent residency in high or lowsaline environmentswas found tovary among species, and the extent of their catadromy is discussed. 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Spatial and temporal variations of the estuarine larval fish community on the west coast of Taiwan

Spatio–temporal variations in the distribution and community structure of the estuarine larval fishes on the west coast of Taiwan was examined in the estuaries of Shuangchi Creek (SC), Gongshytyan Creek (GST), Tatu Creek (TT) and Tongkang River (TK). Fish were collected by a net (mesh 0.8–1.8 mm) set against the flood tide at night during the newand full-moon periods from September 1997 through...

The influence of environmental parameters on fish larval distribution and abundance in the mangrove estuarine area of Marudu bay, Sabah, Malaysia

The aim of this study was to estimate the influence of selected environmental parameters on the fish larval distribution and abundance between October 2012 and September 2013 in the Mangrove estuarine area of Marudu bay, Sabah, Malaysia. Fish larvae samples were collected monthly using plankton net of 350 mm of mesh size with a mouth opening of 40.5 cm in diameter through 20 min surface tows. F...

Factoring scales of spatial and temporal variation in fish abundance in a subtropical estuary

We employed a new approach linking multivariate and time series analyses to identify common versus unique spatiotemporal components of abundance variation of marine spawning fishes recruiting into a subtropical Western Atlantic estuary. Based on a 10 yr standardized monthly data set, we also investigated patterns of association for local and regional factors with annual and inter-annual variati...

Spatial Patterns of Estuarine Habitat Type Use and Temporal Patterns in Abundance of Juvenile Permit, Trachinotus falcatus, in Charlotte Harbor, Florida

The life history of many marine fishes is a 2-phase cycle: juveniles and adults make up a demersal phase, whereas larvae are planktonic. Determining ontogenetic patterns of habitat type use of the demersal phase has important management and habitat conservation implications for species that use coastal habitat types as juveniles. Juvenile permit, Trachinotus falcatus, are presumed to be limited...
